San Diego Recycling BS!

Did you know in San Diego county it is ILLEGAL to NOT recycle?  I had NO idea until I found this on my trash can the other day:

IMG_0911IMG_0912

It says “Did you know that is is now illegal for persons who have recyling and yard waste collection service provided by the City to dispose of recyclables into a refuse container? (City of San Diego Municipal Code Sections 66.0704, 66.0705)  Recylable material were found in this trash container”

Not only do I use my recycle bin, I also have a compost bin in my backyard where I compost my organic waste.

Also keep in mind, he benefits of recycling are still debatable:

Let me get this straight, the United States is so broke they are printing money, California is borderline bankrupt, and San Diego is in a financial crisis.  Yet the City of San Diego still has the time and money to send out government bureaucrats to sort through my garbage and notify me that I’m not recycling properly?!

Or maybe I just hit the nail directly on the head.  Since the city is so broke, they are looking into “alternative” funding methods.

Let this be a lesson to all you voters out there.  You give them an inch and they will take a mile.  This next video might seem outrageous, but who would have thought it would be illegal NOT to recycle 10 years ago?

Hacking “The Perfect Beaker”

IMG_0781IMG_0782

I love my “The Perfect Beaker“, its great for measuring items in the kitchen.  I just get annoyed every time  I take it out of the dishwasher because the bottom is also a small beaker that collects water as well as other “goodies” while in the dishwasher.  I have to empty the gunk out and re-wash the bottom.  Today was the last time.  I took it out in the garage and drilled four tiny holes all around the bottom, so any water that ends up in there can drain out.

Hopefully the next time I reach into the dishwasher to take out my “The Perfect Beaker” the bottom will be empty and dry.

EDIT:

Here is a simulation I ran by putting it in the sink and running water into it.  Not the best video quality, but basically the water fills up the bottom, and quickly drains out the small holes, till almost everything is drained:

Facebook Subscribe via Email?

Facebook has a really cool feature that allows you to be notified instantly when people of your choosing update their status.  HOWEVER, this is only available for SMS and NOT email.

Facebook needs to get with the time, SMS is so 1980′s!  SMS costs money, where email is unlimited and included on most smart phone data plans.

Or is there a deeper darker secret here?  Is Facebook and Twitter in bed with the cellular providers as a way to generate yet more money via SMS?

The answer is unclear, but I wish Facebook would come out with a “Subscribe via Email” feature soon.
